CANON CREATIVE STUDIO SELECTS MICHAEL ORI (ORI MEDIA) AS LEAD PHOTOGRAPHER FOR SUNDANCE FILM FESTIVAL 2017 PORTRAIT STUDIO

(Park City, UT) - Michael Ori (filmmaker, photographer and founder - Ori Media) will lead the Portrait Studio at the Canon Creative Studio at the 2017 Sundance Film Festival for the second year in a row. The Canon Creative Studio opens in conjunction with the festival and is located directly on Park City’s iconic Main Street. It creates a hub for filmmakers and invited guests to engage in hands-on experimentation and exploration from pre-production through production and post.

Headshots will be captured on the Canon 5D Mark IV by Michael Ori and retouched by Joey Joanitis (DIT - Ori Media). Images will be printed on the spot with a Canon Pro-1000 printer, providing a physical 8x10 image. On-site IMDb Pro Staff will be available for immediate upload, and images will be subsequently available at orimedia.com/sundance. Equipment demonstrations, conversations and snacks provided as well.

Michael’s relationship with Canon began in 2012 through a “Quit Smoking” campaign involving the innovative use of stills-from-motion 4K video on Canon’s versatile workhorse, the Canon EOS 1D C.  From the initial discovery, the Ori Media  team have field-tested and reviewed numerous Canon cameras - most recently the highly anticipated 5D Mark IV camera. Michael and Joey subsequently joined Canon for a month long press tour through Vietnam, South Korea, Thailand, Beijing and Hong Kong, commencing with a live demonstration at Canon’s Festival of Photography.  The Canon 5D Mark IV will be available for live-learning opportunities at the Canon Creative Studio.

This community, fueled by the successes and failures of entrepreneurs across the Beehive State, offers a multitude of options: events, mentors, investors, wisdom, the list goes on and on. You’ve heard the old sports cliche, “There is no I in team,” but that mantra works across all industries and fields. A community is many different people pushing aside egos, learning, teaching, and most importantly, belonging.

It’s this sense of community that has driven Michael Ori to create Studio Elevn, a Salt Lake City collaborative art studio that gives artists a place to work, connect, and belong.

“It’s all about getting rid of the egos and just seeing the value in everybody and the community, just pushing that out there and helping each other,” Ori told Beehive Startups. “That’s the biggest thing, remembering who helped you and making sure you help them when you can.”

Michael Ori captures the adventures of Canon Australia’s Krystle Wright in Oregon. Krystle Wright is a world renowned adventure photographer specialized in capturing nature and the athletes that relish in it. She dreamt up an idea of shooting kayakers in a new way, launching over waterfalls at night, illuminated by Canon 600EX Speedlights mounted to a drone. In order to accurately document the intensity of the shoot and Wright’s creative passion, Ori Media equipped themselves with a string of Canon cameras, including the freshly released Canon EOS 1D X Mk II. In addition to the 1D X, Ori Media utilized the new Ice Light 2 from Westcott Lighting, the Rhino Evo with motion control, and DJI Ronin.

Krystle and Michael met up with the sports best Kayakers in Hood River Oregon to begin their 3 day journey. Day 1 began with an early morning trip to Celestial Falls where Krystle’s vision started to become a reality. As night fell, the two Canon experts captured each moment with passion for their craft. Krystle capturing the fearless kayakers and Michael filming the immense effort tenacious Krystle and her team put into each click of the shutter. The kayakers glided over the waterfalls while the speedlight bearing drone hovered only feet above to illuminate them at precisely the right moment.

The Oregon woods were dark and damp, but the content captured in 3 short days shines a light on the talent and dedication these two experts exude. The result is a beautiful mini documentary produced for Canon USA and Canon Australia about the journey of Krystle and her crew of ambitious adrenaline junkies in pursuit of the perfect image.

Salt Lake City based motorcycle-lifestyle company, Johnny Bones, approached Ori Media about creating a full campaign for the launch of their new clothing line. The small business had a minimal budget and little time before their clothing was scheduled to launch. In lieu of this, the Ori Media team knew that the Canon EOS 1DX Mark II would be the perfect camera for the project. The internal still frame grabs during playback were very important to Johnny Bones as they have a huge social media following which loves to be up to date with what they are doing in the moment.

These images were pulled straight from the  4K video. The image below was transferred straight from the Canon 1D X Mark II via wifi to the client's smart phone and posted instantly to social media (see image below). Additionally we were able to pull a full campaign of photos for Johnny Bones from the video using our 4K workflow on Adobe Premier and Adobe Lightroom.

Canon USA and Ori Media bring you portraits from the 2016 Sundance Film Festival  taken at the #canoncreativestudio and shot on the EOS 5DS R. Over 300 individuals were shot during the opening weekend on both black and white backgrounds. We assume that's some kind of record but have yet to hear from Guiness World Records.
